Unite Students: Fire Safety Course

DIGITAL TRAINING COURSE

How do you make a compliance course something people actually want to complete? That was the challenge Unite Students brought to Rownd. They needed their annual Fire Safety Awareness training to be more than just a tick-box exercise; they wanted it to genuinely resonate with staff, both operational and support, and inspire real-world behavioural change.

The Challenge: Beyond 'Getting Through It'

Unite Students previously relied on generic, off-the-shelf training. The result? Disengaged employees who simply wanted to finish the course. They needed a fresh approach that:

  • Tailored content: Specific to Unite Students' buildings, procedures, and culture.
  • Boosted engagement: To move beyond passive learning.
  • Delivered impact: Ensuring vital information stuck and influenced actions.
  • Accommodated busy schedules: Allowing staff to complete it in manageable chunks.

Our Approach: Igniting a New Learning Experience

Working closely with Unite Students' L&D and Fire Safety teams, we designed a 30-50 minute digital learning course that stands out. Our aim was to transform a yearly mandatory topic into an energetic, surprising, and even humorous experience that aligned with Unite Students' unique tone of voice.

What Makes This Course Different?

We packed the course with custom-built interactions, blending different media and learning techniques to ensure key messages landed and stuck:

  • Custom-built interactive activities: Designed in Storyline, these get learners actively involved.
  • Short, impactful videos and animations: Keeping learners drawn in without passive watching. These are intentionally under a minute, delivering emotional resonance quickly.
  • Storytelling and role-play scenarios: To make learning relatable and memorable.

The Results

The course is currently rolling out, and early feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.

"I’ve just completed the eLearning course, I really like it. It’s interesting and engaging for the user."

Simon Whittaker, Primary Authority Lead for Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service.
